Usefulness Of Spill Containment Berms

By Dawn Williams

News regarding oil spills have flooded broadcasting networks and daily spreadsheets. Petroleum spillage cause various harmful effects to aquatic resources and life forms, as well as, to people and animals on land. The world operates in a chain and damage to marine habitats radiates to the rest of the members of the link. To contain this destructive condition, there are ways that have been used which include the utilization of spill containment berms.

There are a lot of oil spill disasters recorded in history. The worst of them has affected the lives of millions of people. It has caused fires and infiltrated water beds thereby contaminating the water supply. It has also caused diseases such as skin and respiratory problems. Animals have been forced out of their natural habitats which caused a great disruption of the ecosystem. There are cases that management of overflows has taken years and decades.

In order to prevent an undesirable and a hostile event or occurrence from happening, containment needs to be implemented. It is a noun that is defined as the limitation of harmful substances or happenings from affecting good and accepted conditions. In health, it means a strategy that is employed to limit spread of infectious organisms. It is also a process that helps industries from spilling their wastes and other dangerous chemicals from corrupting natural resources.

Many oil spill responses have been formulated to counter the negative effects done by spillovers to the environment and the living organisms. They can be in forms of mechanical, chemical, biological and physical strategies. Scare tactics are utilized to ward off animals from affected places.

Restricting berms belong to mechanical management. They are generally narrow paths, canals, barriers, or structures that separate two or more things from each other by serving as stationary barriers. They have been used since the nineteen hundreds. They can contain an entire overflow or provide curbing routes to a catch basin.

A berm comes in an assortment of types and sizes. There are portable and small kinds which are primarily used for localizing minimal overflows. They can either be assembled or unassembled. Some models are used temporarily while some are used for a long term purpose. Berming is a standard operating procedure in case of spillage emergency in liquid manufacturing facilities.

Berming has its advantages. One of which is that it provides a quicker way to respond on spillage incidents. To prevent harmful fluids to sip in the water bed, this step is usually taken. It can be easily deployed and set up to immediately limit dispersion of dangerous liquid substances. Through this method, some leakage materials can be used if it is not very contaminated with foreign matters.

An important matter to consider when using limiting barriers is its area capacity. Berms are generally structured for specific areas of contamination only and wider spill coverage may need another form of control. Most of the time, other chemicals are used to aid barriers in the localization of leakage contents. This detail may not be cost effective to some clients.

Spill containment berms are not the only way to control leakages. The community affected can also participate by cleaning up shorelines. An oil spill crisis needs the cooperation of everybody. What people do to nature will come back as a reflection of their actions.
