Maintaining Unique Bird Houses In The Backyard For The Birds

By Amanda Baird

Bird lovers and watchers usually have unique bird houses along their own gardens or backyards to attract birds. But apart from the design of the houses, the correct position and maintenance also affects the birds that come.

It must be noted that each bird actually has its own preference when it comes to bird houses. Small birds like an enclosed box-like house. Others prefer a more open area where they can just eat. Some of them actually prefer single boxes, as opposed to big boxes with several holes.

Bird houses have various types and kinds. There are simple boxes, and there are the more intricate and unique bird houses. Either way, the important thing to consider is where to put them. Placing them near feeders would not make it make it attractive for birds. Placing them near covers is most probably better.

Birds don't like noise and overly populated areas near the bird houses, so refrain from placing the feeders and bird baths near them. Don't forget to properly place the holes of the houses away from the sun, especially during the mid-day and morning sun. This can cause the houses to be too hot inside. Also, since birds like blending in, even the colours of a bird house might affect the way it attracts birds into your backyard.

Instead of hanging your unique bird houses, considering installing them on posts. Also, make sure that the houses are clean. Usually, people clean their bird houses during the spring. This will also maintain the appearance and durability of the houses, even as they get used year after year. In addition, you are also helping the birds' health. Keeping dirty bird houses can also be dangerous for you and your family.

Aside from cleaning the houses, also remember to clean the feeders and the bird baths. Don't forget to regularly change the water, especially since still waters can be dangerous to the health of the birds. Structures should also be checked regularly for maintenance. Birds don't like being housed in a dilapidated bird house, and too many holes at the bottom could also be hard for them to build their nests inside.

When painting the bird houses, make sure that the paint you use would be toxic-free. Birds peck on their surroundings, and they might chip off the paint and accidentally swallow it. Varnishes are also not recommended because of its fumes that may hurt the birds and their nests.

Another thing to consider is the bird houses' ventilation. Birds will avoid those that are too warm or too hot. Holes provide for better ventilation. In addition, there should also be proper drainage holes that are not very big to drain water inside the houses.

By making sure that you've positioned your unique bird houses quite well, birds will be more than happy to visit your garden and make your houses as their nests. Bird watching in your own backyard will surely be better when you get to attract a lot of lovely birds.
