By Jeff Peterson

A lot of the so-called helpful information out there can prove unreliable when you're trying to figure out which home remodeling contractor is right for you. It's tough to know what's true and what's fluff. Since this decision hard enough without wondering which information is good, follow our compiled list of facts to help you cut through the nonsense and make the right call.

Respect your home remodeling contractor's authority. Never discuss problems in front of the crew, be punctual with your payments and stay up to date with your contractor on progress with consistency and regularity. A professional relationship goes two ways! If your residential home remodeling contractor is happy working for you, the quality of their work will show it. Your courtesy and respect goes a long way.

You should always make the contract as specific and detailed as you could possibly make it. Make sure to include brand names or a price range, just so you know what you'll be getting. If you can't mention a brand name, then always try to include the aveage price ranges of a product.

Ensure that you have a detailed, written agreement prior to beginning improvement about the materials you expect your home remodeling contractor to use. This "material list" should include details such as model numbers, brands, sizes, capacities and other physical characteristic of the materials you intend to use. You need to be able to compare their material estimates against current market rates to ensure they're not overcharging you.

Have a healthy discussion with your home remodeling contractor and if he tells you that the work cannot be delivered on time, make sure to check your plan. If more than one contractor tells you that the work cannot be delivered on time something is surely wrong with you. Never trust a residential home remodeling contractor who makes false promises.

Just driving through a suburban area? Why not find current job sites? There are most likely some that are just sitting around, this will give you the chance to talk to any workers or home remodeling contractors on the site, to get a good referral to a trusty contractor.

Use Facebook and other social media platforms to search for home remodeling contractors. Most of the time when you use social media to search for a contractor you will see all the positive and negative comments or posts about them.

You should remember that it is up to the home remodeling contractor to pay their own taxes, not you. You're responsible for supplying the contractor with the 1099 tax form so that they can use it to show their earned income on the taxes. Submit this to the IRS to assist the residential home remodeling contractor with this task.
